Real-time graphical programming environment for audio
PD is a real-time graphical programming environment for audio and graphical processing. It was planned as a free, better and more stable Max/fts, which has also been developed by Miller Smith Puckette at IRCAM.
PD was written for multiplattform from the beginning and therefore is more portable; PD is open source software, it is free for any use and can be downloaded with the Internet. PD runs at least on Win32, IRIX, LINUX and Mac-OSX plattforms.
It is easy to extend PD with (third-party) plug-ins (so-called "externals"). Many collections of externals (so-called "libraries") are already available und the PD community and developpers grows rapidly last years contributing more and more library objects and patches ranging from building Synthesizer, over Streaming Audio, OpenGL-3D...

It is used as a rapid prototyp-software for DSP-algorithmn, as also as an music instrument and universal multimediaspftware. Also it is used in the academic field for teaching and exploring computermusic and new media art.
